Comptroller Issues Temporary Waiver for Motor Fuel Tax Licensees and Emergency Responders

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (July 25, 2017) — In the wake of an F2 tornado ravaging parts of Kent Island early Monday morning, Comptroller Peter Franchot today announced a temporary waiver of motor fuel tax payments for companies that may have been impacted by the storm.

“Our primary focus is ensuring that businesses and individuals impacted by this storm can focus on cleaning up and rebuilding their community,” said Comptroller Franchot. “My office stands ready to assist and to ease any burdens we can.”

International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) licensees located in the affected area of Queen Anne’s County have a one-month extension to file their 2nd quarter IFTA tax returns; they are now due by August 31, 2017. Businesses who file and pay by the extended deadline will receive a waiver of interest and penalties.

Additionally, Maryland Motor Fuel Tax license holders in Queen Anne’s County also have a one-month extension to file their June 2017 motor fuel tax returns; they are also now due by August 31, 2017. A waiver of interest and penalties will also be granted to licensees who file and pay by the new due date. Certain IFTA requirements are also temporarily waived for shippers and carriers of essential emergency relief supplies, or to those that are providing restoration of utilities to the affected area.
